What You Need to Know About the R-410A Phaseout in 2025

2025 is bringing us one of the biggest changes in the HVAC industry: the phaseout of R-410A refrigerant. Here’s what homeowners will (and won’t) need to stress about.

🛠️ What is R-410A, and Why Is It Going Away?

R-410A, also known as “Freon” or “Puron” (depending on what you grew up saying), has been the standard refrigerant in most residential HVAC systems. After all production and import for its predecessor, R-22, was banned in 2020, R-410A was seen as a greener alternative.

With R-410A having a Global Warming Potential (GWP) of 2088, this makes it a target under the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s climate-friendly goals.

🌍 What’s Replacing It?

Meet R-454B!

This new refrigerant has a GWP of just 466. That’s a 78% reduction compared to R-410A and will become the standard in new systems. (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, 2025)

At Blue Ridge, we’re offering next-generation equipment, like the ArcticFlex system, that’s compatible with R-454B. It’s just one more way we’re preparing your home for the future.

No. Here’s what you need to know:

  • You can still service and repair R-410A systems until 2036.
  • Our trucks are stocked with R-410A and R-454B, so we’re fully prepared to handle any needs during the transition.
  • Just replaced your system? No worries, many units still use R-410A and come with full warranties and long lifespans.

There are three main issues coming with this transition:

  • R-454B will be harder to find. Many people are trying to switch their refrigerants at the same time causing a lot of strain on manufacturers trying to keep up with the demand.
  • R-454B is more expensive than it used to be. Production costs due to tariffs from materials imported from overseas. Additional expenses are often passed down the supply chain, leading to higher prices due to the sudden demand and the imposition of trade tariffs.
  • HVAC system installations and repairs are getting delayed. Shipping problems and a shortage of special equipment are leading to logistical challenges. (HVACR Global, 2025)

This is why we’re advising customers to start planning ahead. If your system is 15-20 years old, talk to an HVAC professional soon so you’re not stuck waiting when things get even tighter.

💸 Will New Installations Cost More?

Yes, slightly.

Newer systems tend to cost 10–15% more due to design changes for R-454B refrigerant, new components, and added safety protocols for mildly flammable refrigerants.

But they also come with better efficiency ratings, which means lower energy bills over time. It’s an investment that will end up saving you money down the road.

  • Schedule an inspection if your system is 10-15 years old or shows any potential warning signs that it might be time for a replacement. Click here to learn about what to look out for.
  • Stay informed. We’re always here to answer your questions and provide you with helpful resources and updates.
  • Consider a Blue Ridge Comfort Maintenance Plan to keep your current system running as efficiently as possible.
