You Found WHAT in My Ducts?! | Brevard NC Duct Cleaning Case Study

The Hidden Ecosystem in Your Vents: A Brevard Duct Rescue

We often tell our clients that if you haven’t seen the inside of your ductwork, you don’t truly know what you’re breathing. This past August, we headed out to a home in Brevard, NC for what looked like a routine maintenance visit. What our technicians found with their high-definition scoping cameras was a good reminder of just how fast “out of sight, out of mind” can turn into a real health concern.

General indoor air quality (with a twist).

Here’s what we found when we inserted our specialized duct cameras:

  • Organic Growth & Biofilms: The scoping photos showed significant patches of what appeared to be fungi or mold growing along the interior lining of the supply runs. Not exactly what anyone wants circulating through their home.
  • Debris & Pests: We captured images of dead insects (including a family of ladybugs) along with other unidentifiable organic debris lodged deep in the flex ducting.
  • Compromised Filtration: The buildup was so heavy it was essentially acting as a second filter — a really dirty one — restricting airflow and pushing allergens into every room in the house.
  • Damaged Linings: In a few spots, the internal insulation of the ductwork had started to break down, creating little pockets where moisture and dust could collect and fester over time.

An Enhanced Duct Cleaning.

Given everything the scope turned up, a standard vacuuming wasn’t going to cut it. Here’s what we did:

  • Botanical Disinfection: We applied a specialized botanical disinfectant rated to kill 99.9% of bacteria, viruses, fungi, and mold without filling the home’s air with harsh synthetic chemicals.
  • Full System Scrub: Every register was removed, cleaned, and reinstalled. We scrubbed all supply and return ductwork, plenums, and chases from end to end.
  • Dryer Vent Integration: While we were at it, we cleared the dryer vent too. It’s a simple step that meaningfully reduces fire risk and helps the appliance run the way it’s supposed to.
  • Filtration Reset: We wrapped up by installing a fresh customer-supplied filter, so the newly cleaned system had a clean start.

We recommended the Enhanced package here because the scope made it clear we were dealing with biological growth, not just ordinary dust. Mechanical cleaning does a great job removing debris — but it takes an EPA-registered disinfectant to go after the microscopic spores that cause odors and respiratory irritation. And in the Lowcountry’s heat and humidity, mold doesn’t need much of an invitation to come back if the underlying moisture conditions aren’t addressed.

Don’t let a contractor just “blow out” your vents and call it done. Ask for a digital scope so you can actually see what’s in there.

If disinfection is on the table, ask about botanical solutions. They’re highly effective against mold and bacteria, and a much gentler choice for homes with kids, pets, or anyone with sensitivities.

See black “dust” or dark spotting on your white ceiling registers? That’s often a sign of moisture in the ducts and organic growth starting to take hold.

Restricted airflow forces your dryer to work harder, heat builds up inside the machine, and your fire risk goes up significantly. Add dryer vent cleaning to your annual HVAC maintenance.
