What Was The Problem With Their Old HVAC?

We Replaced The Old Window ACCindy currently used a window AC unit to keep her space cool in the Summer, and a mobile heater to warm the space in the Winter. She did also have an old central air conditioning system, but you can see, it was old, rusty, and barely worked. She found that if she just ran that without the window AC, it would still be too warm in the house.

Even though there was heating and air conditioning in the house, it wasn’t the most convenient. The energy bills were too high, and the heating and cooling just didn’t feel perfect. Luckily for Cindy, she came across the mini split giveaway, and decided to enter.

Installing The New Mini Split

Mini splits are one of our favorite systems to install for homes and businesses, and our experts are trained and practiced in the installation process. For this project, it took less than a day to get the mini split installed.

As it’s said in the name, these systems are ductless, meaning they don’t use ductwork to deliver the air like a traditional HVAC system would. This makes the installation process a bit easier and quicker. All we needed to do was install a single condenser outside, run a little tubing from the condenser outside to a ductless head that we hang inside, and the project is finished!

Not only does this absence of ductwork make the installation process simpler, but it also helps improve energy efficiency. Traditional HVAC systems that use ductwork tend to lose some air in the delivery process. The ducts may leak a bit of wear down over time. With a ductless mini split system, all that treated air is pushed through tubing, and nothing is lost like it may be in traditional ductwork.

Mini Splits Vs Window Air Conditioners

The main replacement for Cindy was getting rid of the window AC unit. Window air conditioners are very common, and we get it. They are cheap and easy to install. But they do come with a fair amount of drawbacks, some of which Cindy was experiencing. Here are a couple comparisons between ductless mini splits and window air conditioner units.

Energy Efficiency

We Made Sure The Unit Was Properly Sized And Installed
One of the most important benefits of ductless mini splits would be the energy efficiency. These systems are designed to use the least amount of energy possible. They use the heat transfer process that heat pumps do, in order to provide comfort, without having to generate a lot of energy to do so.

These systems are more energy efficient than window air conditioners, and will cost less when it comes to the monthly utility bills.

This is something Cindy was VERY excited about. She said her energy bills before this were through the roof, even if the place wasn’t as cool as it should be.

Noise Levels

Ductless mini splits are designed to run VERY quietly. They usually work in between 20-30 decibels, which is about as loud as a whisper, or leaves rustling. Conversely, a window AC unit usually lands around 50-60 decibels, around 2-3X as loud as a ductless unit. If you’ve ever been in a room with a window AC running, you know how much it actually does disrupt you, and cause you to raise the volume of a TV, music, or whatever else you may be trying to hear!

Better Comfort

This may be the most important factor. Ductless mini splits provide improved and precise comfort compared to a window AC. Have you ever been in a room where you have to sit directly in front of a window AC unit? It can be freezing and uncomfortable! These units do NOT cool evenly, and can cause discomfort even when it’s working fine.

Ductless mini splits can get to a precise temperature, and then maintain it with a low power mode. They disperse air more evenly so it isn’t concentrated on just one spot either.

Less Space Taken

One of the worst parts of a window AC is the space it takes up in your window. You no longer get to use that window for sunlight, or popping it open for some fresh air. That window is essentially taken up for the entire summer.

Heating And Cooling

One of the other tremendous advantages that ductless mini splits have over window AC units is the heating and cooling capabilities. Window AC units do one thing: provide cold air. Ductless mini splits can provide cold AND hot air, making them a year round solution compared to the seasonally appropriate window AC.
