Adding A Ductless Mini Split Into A Greenville, SC Basement
This Ductless Mini Split Installation in Greenville, SC Provides Impeccable Comfort for a Finished Basement
The homeowners of this split-level home in the Paris Mt. area were finishing their basement, to make it a more functional space for their family. This additional space would need to be heated and cooled, so they gave us call here at Blue Ridge Heating & Air to see what we would recommend.
Problem: Homeowners were remodeling the basement in their split-level home and needed to add heating and cooling for the space.
Solution: A single-zone Mitsubishi Ductless mini split for heating and cooling will make this space comfortable year-round.
Heating and Cooling Basement Spaces
Basements are the lowest floor in your home, and are sometimes built below grade, so they tend to stay cool, even in the summer. They also tend to retain moisture and feel clammy. When you are looking for a solution, you want to not only take into account heating the space, but choose a solution that will also help control humidity.
There are lots of options for heating basements, from baseboard heating to space heaters, to pellet stoves. Each of these options has its pros and cons, but one of the most reliable and efficient options is a ductless heat pump.
Mitsubishi ductless heat pump systems are up to 70% more efficient than electric baseboards, and up to 30% more efficient than standard air conditioning. This makes these a great choice to not only provide great comfort throughout your space, but to also save money on operating costs.
In addition, these systems also help monitor and control the humidity in your space, making them extra comfortable. Older HVAC systems would only account for temperature, not humidity.

What Is Ductless?
Mitsubishi ductless mini-split systems are high-efficiency heat pumps, that can use the ambient air outside to add heat inside your home, or reverse the process and remove heat from inside your home to outside, cooling the air! They are called mini-splits because they have two main components- an outdoor condenser unit, and an indoor unit, often called a head or cassette.
he outdoor unit is small and can be conveniently located at the side of your home, as you can see in the picture here. We have also elevated the unit up off the ground, making it easier to keep the unit clear of leaves and debris in this great neighborhood that’s full of trees. The outdoor unit features a variable speed compressor, meaning rather than being either on or off, the unit can work like a dimmer switch on a light, and use just the right amount of energy necessary to keep you comfortable- and this can save a tremendous amount of energy.
One outdoor unit can power up to 8 indoor units, making the system modular, and one that can meet your changing needs- or budget!
The indoor unit comes in many varieties, but often it is a unit mounted up high on the wall. From this position, the state-of-the-art sensors monitor the room for both temperature and humidity and make small adjustments as needed to keep the space perfectly comfortable, distributing heated or cooled air throughout your room.
Mitsubishi ductless units can be controlled from a handheld remote, or you can opt for a thermostat or use their Kumo Cloud app and control the unit from your smartphone as well!
For this basement remodel, a single wall-mounted indoor head was all that was needed to keep the space perfectly comfortable. From this position, the system can distribute comfortable air throughout the space, eliminating hot and cold spots. That’s particularly nice in a basement, that can sometimes feel cold and clammy.
The system also can be turned off or go into standby mode when not in use, saving you money by not heating or cooling a space when it’s not in use.
This means that the family can now turn off the system when they are away all day, but turn on the system, even remotely, when they are on the way home from the Kumo Cloud app, so they come home to a perfectly cozy new family room, ready to enjoy the evening, never missing a beat.
Affordable Comfort
Best of all, because Mitsubishi ductless systems are so efficient and environmentally friendly, they qualify for rebates from Duke Energy and tax credits under the new Inflation Reduction Act of up to $2,000. That helps make a solution like this one more affordable for installation, and let’s not forget the smaller energy bills every month!
